How to Be the Butterfly and Soar with Guest Angela Orora Medway-Smith

I'm often asked why I chose the word "metamorphosis" to describe my own journey, and to encapsulate my coaching. And the answer is simple.

Metamorphosis is more than just transformation.

Because we already have everything we need inside us to become the woman we deserve to be...it's a matter of unleashing it. Our way. On our terms.

Angela Aurora Medway Smith, the practical mystic and founder of Carriad Spiritual, to talk about how to be the butterfly and saw. So welcome, Angela. It's fabulous to have you here.

I am. Now the big question is how many times will I stumble over the word metamorphosis? Because of all the words in the world for me to decide to call the midlife metamorphosis coach. Lucky I don't drink anymore. But metamorphosis is a word close to both our hearts. And something else that's close to both our hearts. I'll take you back to when we first met at an online networking event. And you and I are both, well, you've got some exciting developments to announce later on. We're both big fans of networking and cheerleading. But in the old days, I think it's fair to say that in networking sessions, women tended to fall into two camps, for want of a better word. You had the more corporate-minded, and then the woo-woo, slightly off the wall, maybe whatever the PC phrase is these days. But now it's wonderful to see the lines are blurred, aren't they? We're open, we're opening our eyes to exploring new things. And I know you're finding that very much in your line of expertise, aren't you?

Yes, absolutely. I mean, basically, people are waking up to what's possible and how to use ancient spiritual tools in a practical way to change your life.

Yeah. Yeah. And I'm delighted that later on I'm going to be picking your brains, drawing out all your expertise for some top tips for how we can embrace your knowledge, your expertise, learn more to let the butterfly soar. But first, and I love the story behind the woman because that's what Midlife Unlimited is all about. We're not a business podcast. Yes, business ideas come into it because that's entwined with who we are. But can you take us back? I mean, how how did oracles become part of your life? Was it from childhood?

Well, as a child, I was very aware of spirit. It was, you know, I was one of these children that that had invisible friends. And it was just accepted, you know, my family didn't turn the noses up at it. Just it was there then.

Were you perturbed by it as a child, or did it seem calming and was it a pleasant feeling?

SPEAKER_00 4:05

No, it was wonderful because I was quite quite quite happy with my books and my little friends, and um, yeah, so I was I was quite happy. And then you begin you begin to need to fit in to comply with what society requires of you. So and this is the same of many psychic children, they they will forget, they will push these these abilities down, and you know, I'm sure there are many, many, many mothers out there who can relate to their children having seen someone or having sensed someone or coming out with something they can't possibly know. This is perfectly natural. When we're children, we're really open to it, and then we naturally close it down in order to be able to function in society. And when I was 19 and had moved to London, I had an experience that um that changed my life. So basically, I went along to this first meditation session, and all of my Claire senses switched on as if somebody had turned on the the a big switch in a nuclear power station, and it was like roof, and I could sense, I could see, I could feel, it was all the things. It was absolutely terrifying. Even the teeth the meditation teacher just sort of looked at me and thought, oh my god.

Explain, by clair senses, are they different to our five senses, or is it just another phrase?

SPEAKER_00 5:53

Yeah, yeah, no, they they are for every physical sense we have, we have a clair sense. Claire, just a French word for clear. So clairvoyance is clear seeing, clear audience, clear hearing, clairsentience, clear sensing, clair cognizance, clear knowing. And I mean, so going back to the story, yeah. What this every what this lovely lady did, she looked absolutely terrified and scribbled down, scribbled down on a piece of paper, you need my teacher. And basically, I called this wonderful lady, Betty Bolcom, the following morning, who said to me, Oh, I've been waiting for you to call.

Oh my goodness. Yeah. But how did that feel? Was that like a kind of goosebumpy moment, or did that feel calming and was it a good feeling?

SPEAKER_00 6:50

Well, I was kind of in my mind, I was trying to work out, well, you know, has Nalanie told her I'm gonna ring her, or does she just know I'm gonna ring her? Yeah, what's this all about? And and then when I landed up on her doorstep a few days later, she said, Oh, welcome, Angela. I've been waiting for you to find me. And then my mind just going, Well, I've worked out the way from the station. You know how your mind works, yeah, you know. Um, yeah, yeah. Anyway, I spent seven years, seven years with Betty. And yeah, absolutely. My my mentor, she was my mentor, absolutely loved, loved, loved, loved that period of my life. And then I moved back to Wales. So while all this is going on, I'm I've got proper jobs. So I worked in banking, I spent a decade in in organizing events for people like the CBI, uh, British Computer Society. And then when I moved back to Wales, I moved back to work in a charity that supported people with mental health problems because I'd I was kind of done with working for profit, profit, profit all the time. And I really wanted to be able to give something back. And the healing abilities that I had tapped through Betty, um, I was able to kind of use those in the background while I was still in a very practical role because I was corporate services manager.

So it was a double life you were leading, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_00 8:39

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. And you don't tell people that you're a medium when you're working in psychiatric services.

SPEAKER_01 8:51

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 8:51

Because yeah, I could quite easily say, all right, come along, dear. You know, they they, you know, there are many misunderstood psychics and mediums who have been supported by psychiatric services in perhaps not the way that they need to be.

I think that's why I'm so excited to have you as my guest today, because I think mediumship, it is one of those very grey areas that thankfully now, because people like you are speaking openly about it, are taking off that veil of mystery that it's been shrouded in. And that kind of is it a good thing? Is it a bad, I mean, what is good and bad anyway? But you know, is it a dark thing? Is it something to celebrate? Oh, do I dare get involved? What will happen? And I think, and especially like if you turn on Netflix or any streaming channel, there there are bound to be loads of slightly spooky films that will have mediumship at the core of the plot line. So it gets quite a bad rap in a certain way, doesn't it?

Well, it's been sensationalized. That's the word I was looking for, yeah. Yeah, yeah. And that's because as in the society we live in now, it's not accepted. If we go back, you know, a few hundred years, if we go back to, you know, our early societies, yeah, then there was always there was a a wise woman, a shaman, uh, a healer. Ancient wisdom, isn't it? Yeah. Every community. There and and these these pockets, these still exist in in many communities. So, you know, we've just forgotten, and and basically we were broadburned as witches in Europe um and North America, because I mean it it comes back to women having power because it was usually the women that were the midwives and the healers. So it comes back to that, and you know, being suppressed by the patriarchy, that that that our natural abilities have been to a great extent um pushed down and pushed down into something that's bad and and like again sensationalized by the media.

No, absolutely, because I say we talk a lot on midlife unlimited about, and it is a midlife thing, I think, and perhaps for women in particular, about the fact that we are stifling ourselves and pushing ourselves down. But you were you were very much doing that, weren't you? And obviously, behind you, listeners, she's got all her books there, and we're going to talk about that because it must have been that moment of at blinking last, I can let everything just be me. I can let this all out. I mean, how did it feel when you actually were you giving yourself permission just to actually let is the word channeling? I I don't want to use the wrong word. I don't know if there is a wrong word. Talk me, talk me through how it felt to actually be at last able just to go, yes, I'm doing this.

So it it came to a point in my life where I I'd been running organizations, yeah. I'd and it came to a point in my life where I didn't want to work for anybody anymore. I wanted to follow my soul's path. And my soul's path was about helping others to rise, helping others to heal, helping others to align to what their soul's path is. So I I kind of went around that in a way that felt natural for me because I started from zero in in Wales. So the first thing I thought, right, how am I going to grow this? So I thought, well, I'll I'll organise some festivals and events. And so I I had festival and event and events in my town. I used to go to other people's festivals, then I started teaching, and then it came a point, so I'm very connected to my guides, and I'll I'll explain to listeners how they can actually, you know, oh work with their guides in a little while. And my guidance was you need well, first of all, it was um you're going to write this book, which so the first book was the the book of many colours, not write the book, but channel the book. So I'm a channel for the archangelic and ascended master collective. Um what that means, so there are lots of different forms of mediumship, but I work in light trance. Now, this is gonna think people are gonna go, woo, this is really woo-moo.

So you are because I asked you this before, you are aware of of what is coming through you. Absolutely.

I'm I move my consciousness out and allow these divine beings to use my voice, and you know, they they they then say what they want to say. I'm observing, listening all the time. There are lots of different forms of trans mediumship, but that's light trans. And um, I mean, it's the most incredible feeling, the most incredible feeling. So, first came the book of many colours, and then I became then I was guided to be part of a book collaboration called 25 Tools for Goddesses, and I learned so much from that experience that you know I wanted to do more, so I did I did more book collaborations, they're absolutely fantastic for getting your name out there into different markets. You know, I got I've I've picked up clients from all over the world from being being in other people's collaborations, and then came the point of leading my own collaborations. So as we speak now, I'm about to launch the fifth um oracle book. So we started with the energy healers oracle, two of those volumes which help people understand the different types of energy healing because people think, oh, it's just rachiospiritual healing. Well, no, there are hundreds of different frequencies we can tap into, but there are 40 of them covered in those books, and oh, by the way, I'm really proud of this bit. The first volume was voted number 21 of the top 100 best healing books of all time by book authority. Um, I'm just I mean, we're on the list with these icons, you know, like for Alberto Violdo, uh Barbara Brennan and Deepak Chopra, on the list with these people. Oh my god. So, yes, and then came the Magdalene Oracle, and then the Intuitives Oracle. And this year I'm I'm still looking for authors for Good Grief, the Oracle, and that's gonna be that's gonna be about um all forms of grief, from losing a loved one to losing a limb, to losing your childhood because of abuse, to any form of grief. So, what what I do is I help people, help people who want to share their story to do that, and to use it as a signature store, signature story for their business or whatever they are wanting to promote with a promote. Um because but the wonderful thing about the oracle books is that they all contain a practice you can do at home. So you're not just reading a story, you're being empowered. And for me, that's the important part, the really important part. I mean, I must be honest, I went a bit over the top in the intuitives oracle. I've got over 50 practices in there. Wow, but but I do believe, you know, everybody has this ability, and it can help us soar. Absolutely. So when I sorry, no, no, you go, no, no, you go, you go. So when I started my business, I chose the butterfly as my logo, and that butterfly has been through an evolution of its own. So the butterfly started as a person who it was the but is the butterfly being completely balanced. So all the chakra colours were showing in the rainbow. So the rainbow butterfly, people knew me as the rainbow butterfly back in Wales. And then after a few years, it didn't feel right because what I was actually teaching people to do was go further than that, and so then I had the person with their arms raised, reaching up into the flower of life, representing all that there is, everything, because we can we can access all that there is in terms of energy, in terms of frequency, in terms of wisdom, in terms of you know, divine guidance, the whole kit and caboodle. But I'm going through another evolution, and not so the butterfly now has actually moved, and I've now moved into a different image completely, and that's of a sacred symbol called the Besica Piscis, and it's literally the two golden circles interlinked.

I can see it behind you because to me that looks like a Venn diagram from my maths days at school.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But actually, what that represents is divine balance, the balance of masculine and feminine, and where you need to be is the center point. Yeah, yeah. Um because that's what I help people do, is is is to do that, is to become all that they are, all that their soul wishes them to be.

SPEAKER_01 20:04

Well, I say I like the phrase what we deserve to be, unleashing what we deserve to be. And I say balance again is a phrase that there are so many areas of our life, particularly in midlife, where we're trying to find a balance, aren't we? Whether it be hormonal, whether it be between the sandwich generation of having kids and old older parents or a career shift relationship. I mean, balance is a word that sums up a lot of what's going on, isn't it? All the changes you want to find some balance. Peace and balance, yeah.

Yeah, harmony, I think. Yeah, peace and balance, you know, combined give you harmony. Yeah, it's it's it's so powerful when we find that inner harmony because we're in alignment, and on honestly, hand on heart, life flows with more ease and grace when we're in that alignment. And that's that's what I help people, that's what I help people to do through in a practical way, which is why I'm the practical mystic.

No, I love that, I love that. And we are gonna go into your top tips because you did mention that you were going to share them, and I'm so excited. Um, but before we did, you you you're when we first chatted, the name Kariad Spiritual, it's beautiful, but you said it it means something very special for you, the reason you chose that phrase, isn't it? Because what does kariad mean in Welsh?

SPEAKER_00 21:30

Well, kariad means sweetheart or love, but it's actually got much more depth than that. It carry is the word for love, and so cariad is you are my kariad. But it it is much, much more, much, much more than that. It's uh it's really difficult to describe because it it's about a love that is is. Is unrestrained. It's kind of the love that you have from your grandparents, that kind of love. You know, the kind of love where anything you do is fine. Kariad is about all of that and more. It's about support, it's about all of those things. It's just a word that's really close to my heart. So when I started first, I carried spiritual, spiritual love. So it's a love from spirit, from from all that there is.

I do like the idea of, well, you're actually going through rather exciting, not just a rebrand, but there are loads of new developments that we're going to be talking about later on when we share your contact details that are obviously in the show notes for our episode and on your profile on the Midlife Unlimited podcast website. But before we get there, I'm I really want more practical mystic. Please share some of your top tips, if that's the right word, insights for how we can find that glorious harmony and let our butterfly soar. For the listeners, what what tips could you give them when they're sitting here on this February day? Valentine's Day is looming, they don't feel much love for themselves. How can they ignite that love? Because that's what it's all about, isn't it? Loving ourselves as absolutely.

Absolutely. I'm going to come from a practical point and I'm going to quote a scientist. So Einstein said the intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind a faithful servant. We've created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. So I call this the whisper of the soul, and learning to listen to it can radically transform your decision making. It's not mystical fantasy, it's not woo-woo, it's not otherworldliness, it's mental clarity meeting spiritual intelligence. And when you blend intuition with strategy, you move from reaction to resonance. And that's not magic, it's mastery. So there are three ways that you can really begin to tap into your intuitive abilities and your connection with all that there is. So the the first is to awaken your Claire senses. So we've talked a little about some of the Claire senses. None of this is rocket science. It's actually all very simple. It just means learning to do some practical exercises that that begin to help you develop those intuitive muscles and you're learning to trust those intuitive muscles. So the second principle is to partner with what I call your board of light. So your guides, your angels, your higher self, whatever resonates to you with you. So when you invite this intelligence into your life, you gain access to wisdom that's untouched by fear or ego. And developing that connection is life-changing. So here's here's a quick way how to do it. So before any major decision, breathe deeply, pause and ask yourself what's the highest path forward? And the first thought, image, or feeling that comes, that's divine guidance. That's your intuitive knowing showing you the way forward. And it's the universe supporting you in perfect motion. And the third principle is to ground and protect your energy. So in my work, I teach energy protection, grounding, and other simply daily practices. And when you are grounded, you discern truth from noise and can act from calm certainty. So there's actually a free giveaway on my website where I give people, I just give it away because I think I believe everybody needs to have access to something really simple that they can do every day. It's called Rainbow Waterfall, and it's something I've been doing for 40 years. It's a visualization. If you play it when you're in the shower the first couple of times, your body will get used to, your psyche will get used to and record the feeling of the water and the colours, and then you can do it in two minutes. Literally, you can leave a boardroom, you can leave an argument, you can walk away, go to the loo, wash your hands while you're sort of bringing down the rainbow energy, dry your hands, you're recharging, and then shrug your shoulders and you're reset, reset, protected, grounded, all the things. Oh, I like that. That is so powerful. It's really simple. And I yeah, I I love people to pick it up because it's it, you know, it is so simple, and I've I've had amazing feedback from people over the years that have been using it for decades and love it because it's simple.

No, that's that's such fantastic advice, and as you say, you literally is it's practical tips. But I'd I'd love to what advice would you give to anyone listening who is teaching, who's thinking, I'd like to find out more, but they're they're wary, they're maybe a bit fearful because it's it's the unknown, isn't it? It's it's a big power, it's potentially unnerving, scary. How how would you say to them to actually start dipping their toe into the whole into your world or bringing your world into their world?

SPEAKER_00 29:30

Yeah. Well, I would say, first of all, be discerning. Okay. I well, I mean, I've had 40 years experience, but I don't pretend to know everything. And any spiritual teacher that tells you that they do, and only to listen to them, you shouldn't be discerning, and and that's why I've got 17 teachers writing in the intuitives oracle, not just me. But I, you know, as I said earlier, I went a bit mad and I've it made, I mean, I used to teach a 22-week course, and the foundations of the course are in that book, so and that's going to be available on audio in the next couple of weeks as well. So that will my book and many others from other teachers that are out there will give you the practical tools to create a strong foundation so that you feel safe. It's all about feeling safe and then being able to soar. Having the ability to connect with your board of light, your light team, your angels, and have them guide you day to day is is honestly it's life changing. It's life-changing. Because you don't have to worry anymore, you know what the highest path forward is. That doesn't mean you're not going to encounter lessons, because I believe that our soul chooses for us to have certain lessons so that we can learn from them and grow and do what we need to on the planet. You know, sometimes the lessons we have aren't for us, they're for other people.

So it's learning. Because you you did mention obviously, in terms of your oracles, the the the channeling. Is it St. Germain was the main Yeah, yeah. What do I what do I how do I refer spirit guide? What's the word I should use?

SPEAKER_00 31:49

Well, there's lots of different, there's lots of different ones. So everybody has a guardian angel. Everybody, yeah, and we can we can tap into that intelligence. We all have a main guide who is with us the entirety of our lives, but then we have lots of guides that come and go in the same way as when we go to school, we have lots of teachers that come and go that teach us different things. And so if you want to learn to play the piano, for example, you can ask for a guide to come in and support you to do that. It's phenomenal. It's having access, I mean, having access to simple people without bodies. Okay, that's that's the way to think about it. That's what I used to say to my kids when they saw spirit. Oh, it's just people without bodies, don't worry about it. So we have our guardian angel, we have our guide team, and then we have the higher beings, the ascended masters. So the ascended masters are typically souls that have had incarnations on this and other planets, and then have decided to join this collective energy that has chosen to help mankind. So rather than continue evolving themselves as a soul, they've chosen to join this collective, and then we have the angelic beings, and there are thousands of them, thousands of them. Huge, huge, huge subject. So I'm very blessed because my journey has taken me from uh connecting with guides when I was in my uh early twenties, um and to to channeling and having access to literally all that there is. You know, have having that I mean you can't make it up, you you cannot make the things up that happen to me, Kate. You really can't, and I'm I just have to get my let my human out of the way to experience what my soul wants me to do on this path, and I've by and large, I've I've learned to do that, and you know, so we were talking about the networking earlier on, yeah.

So let's say you've got so many new developments, the rebrand and yeah, e-women.

SPEAKER_00 34:32

Yeah, e-women. So, what what happened was last September, my guide said to me, Okay, we want you to pivot, we want you to change the way that you are showing up in the world. So moving now from the last of the books into a more active way of influencing different members of society, okay. So I've been going out to um people through the books, I've been out in the mind, body, spirit arena, but this is to to to the the larger community. So I started on started thinking how I was going to do this, and and a few months have gone by, and then all of a sudden I get this massive opportunity, and I understand why they had me thinking about this three months earlier because I've just just landed the role as managing director of an organization called eWomen Network. I'm bringing it to London. Um, it's been active in the states and Canada for 25 years. There are chapters all over sounds rather exciting.

I'm literally just outside London, so I think I might be uh coming along.

Tell us fabulous, but we but their mission, I mean, I love I love their values, they're about integrity, they're about sisterhood, they're about raising each other up, which is all about it's exactly what I'm about. And me, yeah. And then their mission, get this, their mission is is to create one million female millionaires. Oh so by millionaires, they mean having a million dot million dollar income every year. That's their mission. And you might think, oh my god, it's pie in the sky, but they're doing it, they are doing it. The the quality of the net of this network is phenomenal. The women that are showing up in this network, it's incredible. And when you join one chapter, you can go to any meeting, anywhere, because EAS and electronic, they're online.

No, absolutely, and that's where the power is, isn't it? In the connection, in the in the networking, in the joining the dots, that's what I love.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And learning from these powerhouses, these women who have made it to you know multi-million dollar businesses, you know, they are part of this network. So the opportunities that this is going to bring for the women that join, I'm just so excited. I'm absolutely so excited. So I'm stepping back into my practical role um as an event organizer because I had a decade of doing this. So yeah. So it's yeah.

Oh yes, you're gonna hear me roar. Love it, love it. So is there is there a reason we how did you how do you feel when you hear it?

It's about not being the good girl anymore. It's about not keeping your pe keeping silent, it's about being authentic, it's about being who you are, you know, and not be um unashamedly who you are, and this this is how who I am and how I show up in the world.

And I say, epitomize the title of our episode, How to Saw as the butterfly. Saw and roar at the same time, roar while you're soaring. I'm getting overly excited now. Ah, right now I'd like to know then your midlife mantra. That must be equally powerful, I think.

SPEAKER_00 40:07

Well, I I think you know, when we hit midlife, we we're juggling. Oh gosh, yeah. We're really juggling, but we can actually change that juggling if we actually focus and decide on the mantra. This is my era of alignment. Oh alignment, so not so this the plates are spinning all around you, God aren't they, but you are a lot, you are aligned, and you're not you can like tap this, tap that, tap the other. You're not rushing here, there, and everywhere. You know, I've I've been in the situations with small children, sick mum, you know, postponed mum, full-time job, business on the side, spinning all the plates. Um, yeah, and and but it's about for me, it's about finding the joy in that as well. You know, opening your own.

It's so easy to lose that, isn't it? Yeah. Oh, absolutely.

You know, even one thing, do one thing a day that brings you joy.

And it doesn't have to be a massive thing.

No, it can be really, really, really simple. If if what brings you joy is having a square of chocolate, do it. Yeah. You know, do it. Or a glass of wine, do it. Or anything that brings you joy, whether it's just putting your feet now. For me, it's sitting under a tree.

I was gonna say, it is the just like taking that five minutes just to get outside and just feel that air, fresh air on your face.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because then we ground it. We're we are grounding ourselves, and that is so powerful. Because we can tap into the energy that of the planet when we do that as well. We can, you know, that I did a shamanic practice. Sorry, I'm going on a bit. I did a shamanic practice. Um, I was supporting a shaman doing his retreat on Crete a few years ago, and one of the exercises that he taught was so simple, and it's something that um that the tribe that he's from that they do, and it's basically basically walking consciously, and as you do, you are you are calling energy up from the earth and you are bringing energy down from the sun. It is very simple, but even if you do that, walk, do like a walk a block around your street. You haven't got to be in a field or anything, you can literally walk and feel it doesn't matter if it's raining, raining is cleansing. I'm from Wales, it rained all the time, you know. So it's it's about being in nature because actually that will give us balance and power and ground it and recharge us when we deplete it.

Oh, I love that. I love that. And realign, oh yeah, realign. Yeah. So is realign gonna be the title of your autobiography? What is or have you decided yet? Is it a work in progress?

Well, one that that's been sitting with me for a while and is gonna also going to be a way of me share sharing and helping people. Right, it's called the Book of Many Lessons. Because I believe that every lesson that we have in life is for a reason. And then what I'm going to plan to do is as I've told the story of the lesson, because believe you me, there have been hundreds, then I'll be giving a tool to help people get to overcome. And how did I overcome that lesson? I'm all about practicality.
